El Coney Island, el parque de diversiones que Cuba quiso copiarle a Nueva York

Tomando como referencia el gran parque de atracciones creado en Brooklyn durante la primera mitad del siglo XIX, en La Habana se inauguró el Coney Island en 1918. Actualmente, los cubanos lo conocen como “La Isla del Coco”.

El Coney Island de Brooklyn se hizo famoso por sus atracciones circenses, sus montañas rusas y su gastronomía de ferias, en las que una gran parte de las marcas famosas se encontraban representadas.

La Habana también quería contar con su Coney Island para el divertimento. Además, un parque de diversiones era más que un bueno negocio. Por ello se le encargó el proyecto a la “Compañía Urbanizadora de la Playa de Marianao”.

Además de esta zona de atracciones, los urbanistas debían incluir en el proyecto una zona de playas y otra residencia. De esta forma, el 5 de diciembre de 1918 fue inaugurado el Coney Island habanero. Cuatro años después, se abrió al público el Balneario de La Concha.

El Coney Island estaba muy bien comunicado y abarcaba una extensa área desde la Quinta Avenida hasta la Playa La Concha y llegó a ser considerado una de las atracciones más famosas de América Latina.

El parque rápidamente se volvió famoso, llegando a destacar su gran Montaña Rusa, la Casa de los Cristales y la Estrella.

Con la llegada de las nacionalizaciones de la Revolución cubana el glorioso parque comenzó a perder cada vez más sus encantos. En la década de 1980,recibió una modesta remodelación en la que se le incorporaron algunos equipos japoneses y juegos de mesa, pero ni de esta forma pudo soportar el paso del tiempo. Lo que un día fueron grandes atracciones ya no estaban y se fueron oxidando en el olvido de la gente. Los habaneros comenzaron entonces a visitar cada vez más el Parque Lenin, al tiempo que el viejo Coney Island iba desapareciendo hasta llegar a ser un molesto sitio junto a la Quinta Avenida.

En el año 2004 se produce el encantamiento final sobre el Coney Island para que dejara de ser un símbolo del divertimento capitalista. Un nuevo proyecto resurge sobre las ruinas: La Isla del Coco, inspirado en el fantástico mundo del Capitán Plin, un personaje creado por el escritor, historietista y diseñador gráfico, Jorge Oliver.

Los muñecos del parque, así como los 20 aparatos instalados, fueron construidos en China y ensamblados en Cuba.

Tras largos años de trabajos conjuntos, reuniones bilaterales entre empresas y funcionarios, el parque se reinauguró en el 2008. Desde entonces lo han cerrado para reparaciones en varios períodos.
