La Guardia Costera de Estados Unidos interceptó frente a Cayo Anguila, al oeste de Bahamas, a un grupo de doce cubanos que posteriormente fueron entregados a las autoridades del archipiélago atlántico, lo que supone el cuarto contingente de inmigrantes de ese país localizados en la región en pocas semanas.
La Policía de Bahamas informó este miércoles a través de un comunicado que una embarcación de la Guardia Costera de EE.UU., mientras realizaba labores de patrulla en la zona, localizó al grupo de 12 cubanos.
La Guardia Costera, posteriormente, entregó el grupo a una embarcación de la Real Fuerza de Defensa de las Bahamas (RBDF, en inglés) que los trasladó la noche del martes a la isla de Nueva Providencia, que alberga la capital, Nassau.
El comunicado detalla que la detención fue notificada a la Embajada de Cuba en Bahamas.
El guardacostas estadounidense Charles Sexton interceptó a un grupo de cubanos a bordo de un pequeño velero de madera hace una semana en los bancos de Cayo Sal, también al oeste de Bahamas.
El miércoles 3 de marzo, seis cubanos fueron llevados a bordo de un barco de la Guardia Costera de los EE.UU. después de ser interceptados en Cayo Anguila.
Un día después, la RBDF localizó un barco volcado a aproximadamente tres millas náuticas al sur de Cayo Sal y rescató a 13 cubanos, incluido un varón fallecido.
Bahamas es un territorio en el que en los últimos años ha aumentado la llegada de inmigrantes en situación irregular que tienen como destino final Estados Unidos.
La mayoría de los inmigrantes que son detenidos en el archipiélago atlántico son de Haití, lo que ha creado en Bahamas una comunidad cada vez mayor de personas de ese país que comparte la isla de La Española con República Dominicana, aunque también es habitual que personas de nacionalidad cubana pasen por aguas del archipiélago atlántico en ruta hacia EE.UU.
